Book Review: Harrowing Habits

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Harrowing Habits And Other Queer Horrors
By C.C. Cope

Author C.C. Cope delivers a haunting collection filled with queer love, Eldritch horror, feminine rage, and genuine human experience.

Harrowing Habits follows an unorthodox nun, a monastery riddled with demons, and a gentle love story. The writing is lush, and the monastery settles into your bones as you experience the story. This novella makes up the bulk of the book, and though the pacing isn’t quick it held my attention as I waited to discover what would happen next. The characters are lovable, real, and vivid, and carry the story. Ultimately, it is a story of sisterhood, of the power women have when they work together, and grappling with one’s faith in the face of corrupt leaders.

The following short stories were a fascinating glimpse of the author’s versatility. Not one story was like the last, and each offered an interesting perspective and new characters you’d immediately fall in love with. With everything from vampires, witches, ancient Eldritch goddesses, and mysterious artifacts, I never knew what to expect next.

I ultimately really loved the trans representation in several of the stories, and the queer characters in all of them. I enjoyed the writing style(s) and the characters. There were pieces that felt unexplained, and while I feel this was an intentional choice, I would love to dive further into some of the worldbuilding and lore to see if there’s anything I missed.
