Star Guide
By KC Golden

Star Guide is a fun YA novel written from the perspective of Julianna, a young woman who was “chosen” (read: “kidnapped”) by a constellation made human — Orion. He and a few other constellations have come down to Earth to start a war. She doesn’t understand why there’s a need for war, but despite herself she starts falling for the celestial figure.
There are pieces of this story I had to remind myself not to overthink, such as the classic 19-year-old human x centuries-old immortal pairing.
I loved the reimagining of the constellations as unique, powerful beings who meddle in human affairs every few centuries. I also appreciated the humanization of Orion, despite his very inhuman purpose and powers. He alternates from cold and calculating warlord to absolute himbo who thinks underwear is this century’s latest fashion.
I struggled to connect with Julianna or the other star guides, and would have loved more character depth. Likewise, the politics and battles were vague — I understand Julianna wasn’t meant to understand them but I think the reader would have benefited from a few more snippets of what was going on. That said, our lack of understanding certainly leaves the book open for a sequel or two.
I was absolutely fascinated by the worldbuilding and characters in the epilogue, but I can’t say anything else without spoilers. 👀
Ultimately this was a cute YA read with an air of mystery and celestial suspense.
