Book Review: The Calamities of Camden Callahan

⭐⭐⭐⭐½

The Calamities of Camden Callahan

Brittany Tucker

Wow.

I am.. at a bit of a loss for words. When Brittany Tucker promised a dark YA fantasy, I didn’t expect this book.

The story follows Camden, a pirate by trade who picks up a job from a Revenant – a mysterious, undead man with mystical abilities.

What follows is a tale of darkness, death, medical experimentation, and friendship forged out of the strangest circumstances.

Brittany Tucker’s worldbuilding is entrancing, and the twists and turns keep you guessing at characters’ alliances and motivations. The liveliness of the story reminds me of the Bloody Jack series (one of my all time YA favorites) but this story adds an element of darkness that is gripping and desperate.

For a story that will alternate between making you nauseous, plaguing you with giggles, and making your heart race in anticipation, look no further than The Calamities of Camden Callahan.

Sidebar: The sequel, The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter, just came out TODAY (December 16th!) Links to both books below.
