The Midnight Shift

Chron Seon-Ran

Translated by Gene Png

I have mixed thoughts on this one. I mean, a Korean queer vampire novel? Sign me up.

What was in the book was good. I feel as if the story was unfinished somehow. Scenes pieced together with action happening in between, and an ending that snuck up on me before i had gotten to explore the world or characters.

This may have been a stylistic choice.

Was it worth reading? Absolutely. I would love to see it fleshed out into two complete books, honestly.

So much was left to the reader’s imagination that I felt would have been really good additional context, such as more glimpses of Suyeon’s relationship with Eungyeong and her fate, as well as more about the big bad and his driving force, and Lily and Violette.

Perhaps there will be a sequel that will flesh out the story more.
